Our Day Zero: An Outbreak Response Simulation runs twice on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 9am and 3pm.

Outbreak response depends on speed, and on coordination across data that rarely arrives in one format. This hands-on simulation, hosted by PubHealth Futures in collaboration with Anthropic, places participants inside a fictional outbreak as it unfolds, so they can test systems and workflows before a real event calls for them.

Participants work in small teams across four response roles: epidemiology, communications, healthcare system support, and planning and logistics. Using Claude, teams manage an escalating outbreak by reconciling complex data, coordinating multi-jurisdiction inputs, and drafting urgent public communications under realistic time pressure.

The session is built for a range of technical experience, from participants trying AI tools for the first time to teams already building with them.

The  Choosing AI Vendors with Confidence: A Hands-On Workshop for Public Health Agencies is on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:15am.  

This workshop will describe an assessment framework to define implementation objectives and the problem to solve, determine your organization's readiness, procurement options including build or buy, and evaluate a vendor's offerings against key criteria including interoperability, security, knowledge transfer, and cost structure. Selecting an AI vendor is not the finish line. It is the starting point for integrating a tool into how your agency makes decisions and does its work. This interactive workshop walks public health teams through what it takes to evaluate, procure, and sustain AI tools in a government setting.  

 PubHealth Futures will be in Boston hosting our Practical AI for Public Health Workshop on Sunday, May 31 (1:30–5:30 PM) at the CSTE Annual Conference. 

The workshop will show applied AI in a real-world public health challenge -  an end-to-end electronic case reporting (ECR) workflow using tools powered by AWS. Prior registration required. Bring your own computer and come ready to learn!

The workshop is divided into three parts: 

Part 1: An in-depth review of surveillance-focused tools and applied AI methods
Part 2: Choose among four hands-on breakout sessions that dive deeper into using the tools and methods you'll learn during Part 1
Part 3: A discussion on AI tools and resources currently under development at the federal level
